What is this product? : Castle nut JIS B-1170 is one type of female nut which has a hexagon shape with 6 notches on the top. Its shape looks like the crenellated battlements of a castle, so it’s called Castle Nut. There are other names that we might have heard for this nut as well such as crown nut (Because it is also looks like a crown) or slotted nut.

This nut is always use with a pre-drilled radial hole bolt/screw and a cotter pin (Split pin).
When applying, notch part must be positioned to the bolt hole then insert fit cotter pin through the bolt and notch part of castle nut then, bend cotter pin legs until it wrapped welled to the nut sides. This is to ensure locking function for any strong vibration affected part which loosing is not tolerated.

Generally, there are 2main types with semi types of castle nut that we mostly seen in industry as below
Castle nut Type-1(High type) : The notch part(Crown part) will be shown at the same parallel position as hexagon area of the nut. Nut height will be high which suited for application that nut height is no limit. Also, the application area is allowed cotter pin to be exposed over the nut.
Castle nut Type-1(Low type) : The notch part(Crown part) will be shown at the same parallel position as hexagon area of the nut. Nut height will be thinner than normal type which suited for application which nut height is limited. Also, the application area is allowed cotter pin to be exposed over the nut.
Castle nut Type-2(High type) : The notch part(Crown part) will be a little stepped into the hexagon part. Nut height will be high which suited for application that nut height is no limit. Also, the application area is not allowed cotter pin to be exposed over the nut as this nut designed to be able to keep the split pin legs to be within the hexagon part of the nut.
Castle nut Type-2(Low type) : The notch part(Crown part) will be a little stepped into the hexagon part. Nut height will be thinner than normal type which suited for application which nut height is limited. Also, the application area is not allowed cotter pin to be exposed over the nut as this nut designed to be able to keep the split pin legs to be within the hexagon part of the nut.

Due to its strong locking function, there are also several manufacturing costs and working time hiding behind it as well. Such as bolt/screw must be pre-drilled in circular shape which need tools and man power to operate. Split pin needed pliers to bend its legs which also need man power to operate. Lastly, to make castle nut to be that shape, also need more tools in manufacturing process as well.

How to use? : Firstly, castle nut must be fasten to the screw thread until the notch gap meet the pre-drilled hole of the screw, then insert the cotter pin through the screw and nut until the head part of cotter pin fully reached the circular part. Then use a pliers to bend cotter pin legs until it fully wrapped outside notch parts of the castle nut.

Where to use, what kind of business using this product? : Castle nut is generally applying for strong locking function applications which loosing are not allowed such as bearing of motorcycle wheel, bicycle wheel, machine parts, automotive parts, aircraft parts, and etc. mostly, you will see this castle nut in automotive industries.
